The keto diet can be very tricky when you are on the go and need a drink or meal. In this article we go over the top Starbucks keto coffee options so you are covered when you are hitting up a Starbucks and want to maintain ketosis.
When you’re on a keto diet and trying to consume keto-friendly foods and beverages, your guilty pleasures can pose a threat to your ketosis if you’re not careful. It can be even harder when you’re accustomed to going out to eat frequently or meeting up with friends.
Personally, and I know that I’m not the only one, coffee is something that I must have every day. If I run out of coffee at home, I’m going to go out to Starbucks and get a coffee. If I’m doing a lot of running around, or if I go on vacation, then I’m also going to be more likely to rely on Starbucks on those occasions as well. You probably do something very similar.
However, Starbucks drinks are typically not very keto-friendly and that can put you in a tough spot. But believe it or not, there are actually many choices that you can elect for that are keto-friendly.
Of course, you could just go in and order a black coffee or a coffee with cream and those be keto-friendly, but that’s not why we go to Starbucks, is it? We go there to order tasty coffees that are basically a liquid dessert, am I right? That’s why we’ve compiled a list of ten drinks that you can order from Starbucks that won’t break your diet.
Five Starbucks Keto Coffee Options
The first drink that we’ll mention is the skinny mocha. Chocolate and coffee just go together like cookies and milk to me. Every one of my favorite Starbucks drinks contains chocolate. The skinny mocha is the way to get your chocolate coffee and stick with your keto diet at the same time.
A typical mocha is made with coffee, milk, whipped cream, and their mocha sauce. A regular caffe mocha contains 34 grams of carbohydrates for a 12 oz drink. The skinny mocha only has 18 grams of carbohydrates per 12 oz drink. The difference comes in that the skinny mocha uses a different “skinny” mocha sauce, and non-fat milk.
It may not be on the menu but whenever we ask for skinny drinks, they know exactly what we want.
Skinny Caramel Macchiato
This one happens to be my wife’s favorite drink, maybe with the exception of the seasonal pumpkin spice latte. This one may be a little bit trickier to order. It’s quite possible that if you ask for a Skinny Caramel Macchiato, they may say that they can’t do it, but don’t take no for an answer.
For a grande sized skinny caramel macchiato, you’re going to be looking at around 6-8 grams of carbohydrates normally, but we can get this down to only 5-6 grams of carbohydrates. The way of doing this is by simply ordering the iced version of the beverage instead of the hot version because there will be less milk used.
Ask them for a skinny caramel macchiato with almond milk and no caramel drizzle. Of course, if you are okay with the additional 2 or 3 grams of carbohydrates then maybe ask for a light drizzle of caramel.
If you really want to put some pep in your step, then get yourself a keto Doubleshot. This beverage is espresso, with milk and some vanilla syrup. A grande sized Doubleshot has 3 shots of espresso which contains 225 mg of caffeine. However, if that’s not enough for you then you can take the plunge you can order a venti sized Doubleshot which will deliver a whopping 375 mg of caffeine to your bloodstream!
Now the normal version of the drink is loaded with carbohydrates, so in order to get the keto-friendly version, you’ll need to substitute the milk with either light heavy cream or almond milk. You may want to even get the sugar free vanilla syrup. So probably the best way to order this one would be to ask for a Venti Doubleshot on ice, unsweetened, with almond milk and sugar-free vanilla syrup.
You may be wondering: Does Starbucks have a keto frappucino? Yes! You can actually get a good tasting frappuccino that is low carb as well.
Simply ask for an unsweetened iced coffee with extra ice, no classic syrup, three shots of sugar-free syrup (cinnamon dolce syrup is best), three shots of heavy cream, and blended frappuccino style. This delicious concoction is only going to contain about 5.5 grams of carbohydrates.
Keto Cinnamon Dolce Latte
This is a very classic and simple drink, but it is delicious and one that many people have never tried. The base of this drink is an Americano, which if you’re not familiar with that, it’s basically an espresso that’s been watered down. So it still has the kick of a normal coffee, but a different flavor.
In order to get yourself a cinnamon dolce latte, ask for an Americano but tell them you only want it to be ¾ of water instead of all the way full. With the other 25% of the drink, ask for a large splash of steamed heavy cream. This is what’s going to give it that cozy latte sensation. Then have two pumps of sugar-free cinnamon dolce syrup added and you’ll be set and only at the cost of about 5.3 grams of carbs.
Remember, that if you want to put your own twist on any of these drinks, especially ones like the frappuccino, or if you’d like something different besides a cinnamon dolce latte, you can use any of the other syrups and create your own delicious drink.
